Care and Safety

California Prop 65 Warning

Drilling, sawing, sanding, or machining wood products can expose you to wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Avoid inhaling wood dust or use a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/wood.

Caring for Your Lone Chimney Co. Piece

Outdoor Furniture

Your item has been finished with a high-quality, penetrating oil-based stain and sealer designed to weather beautifully over time. To ensure your piece stays in the family for years to come, we recommend these simple steps:

  • Elevate, Don’t Ground: While our pieces are built for the outdoors, wood loves to breathe. Please try to place your furniture on a patio, deck, or paved area rather than directly on damp soil or grass. This prevents moisture from wicking into the feet.

  • Keeping It Clean: For routine cleaning, warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush are all you need. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemical cleaners, as they strip the protective finish and can raise the wood grain, shortening the life of your piece.

  • The "Bead" Test: Once a year, splash a little water on the wood. If it beads up, you’re good to go! If the water soaks in quickly, it’s time for a fresh coat of oil-based exterior stain to refresh the protection.

  • Seasonal Refresh: If you live in an area with harsh winters, covering your piece or storing it in a shed during the rainy season will significantly extend its lifespan and keep the finish looking fresh.

  • Kid-Friendly Check: Because natural wood can expand and contract with the weather, periodically check the surfaces for minor seasonal checking or splinters, especially if little ones are using the furniture. A quick touch-up with light-grit sandpaper will keep it smooth.

Planter Boxes

For our garden planters, we use 100% pure, all-natural Tung oil on the exterior surfaces. Our planters are assembled using small amounts of Titebond® II wood glue, which is FDA approved for indirect food contact and non-toxic. Together, these ensure that no synthetic chemicals or heavy metals can leach into your soil, keeping your home-grown herbs and vegetables completely food-safe.

Because pure Tung oil is a natural, plant-based finish without chemical hardeners, it requires slightly different care to maintain its protective barrier:

  • Expected Silvering: Over time, exposure to the sun will naturally weather the wood to a beautiful, rustic silver-gray. This is purely aesthetic and does not mean the wood is failing.

  • Reapplication: To maintain the rich, warm wood tone and maximize moisture protection, we recommend applying a fresh coat of pure Tung oil once or twice a year (spring and fall are perfect). Simply wipe it on clean, dry wood, and let it cure.

  • Interior Liners (Optional Pro-Tip): While our planters are built to handle damp soil, adding a breathable landscape fabric liner before adding your soil mix will help protect the wood fibers and extend your planter's lifespan even further.
